Cajun Microwave Bruce Weeks Family Band

This is my first attempt at building this and cooking in it. I put just a little too much charcoal from the start and scorched some wood. But tomorrow I’ll put in some more flashing and a little less charcoal. This Pork Butt Roast sure smells fine here in the driveway.

Very neat. I was actually thinking about builing one… Did you use the plans you buy? Maz

  • BruceWeeks says:

No Maz I just saw some a few years ago in Louisiana and decided I’d google some pics. I totally built this from just looking at photos. Bruce

This idea amazes me b/c the Chinese are accredited with coming up with it despite the fact they are known for their efficiency. Heat rises so this would make this a rather inefficient use of heat, correct? Am i missing something or is this right? I saw another version and they said the coals had to be changed every hour.

Hey Bruce, we put some asbestos fireplace insulation on the one’s we build to prevent burning the box.

    Nice cooker.. I mean microwave

  • na5m says:

Hey, Bruce – what is it called when you BBQ with the heat source above the food? I’ve never seen this before. What are the benefits? Like zihyer said, it seems to waste a lot of heat.

  • BruceWeeks says:

Actually this is basically an outside oven that is like a roaster. One thing that can be done is that a grill can be attached to the top for hamburgers or hotdogs for whoever don’t want whats inside. I would not call this a BBQ cooker since it is not smoked. This is the cajun version of pig in the ground. I also have a La Caja China someone gave me that I’ve never used, but may before the summer is over. We’ll see as time goes by …. Its makes a pretty interesting conversation at festivals
